fast track

Some progress shots of the project, things are changing really quickly. I've had to cut out the black ones with arms, and now they are becoming an extension of the "Anima/Animus" project. Hopefully it will all come into play soon. But the new drawings, which use the old drawings will be based off some of the work of Ben Tour and possibly Blaine Fontana will have some influence there.

It's really tempting to put some text on these, but I'm not too sure. Do they look finished?

These are the new ones, we'll se what happens here later in the week. Hopefully I have time to pull it all off.

I cooked up a new artist statement since "Project Arms" is now offically debunked.

These are a series of works that explore the relationships between male and female identities through the use of representation. Sourced from how each sex represents each other in their own media, these works are trying to re-evaluate the concepts of male and female identities and differences. Are we still trying to attract attention from ourselves or from each other? How does one see the other side?

Language and gesture play a large part in sexual and non sexual relationships, through the use of these; I hope to explore the differences between how each sex engages with each other.

I think it describes everything a lot better.

Forward march

Just an update on how the Anima/Animus pictures are going. As predicted by this week, they are heading more or less in the right direction. There are some problems to fix and a whole barrel with the Female/Male ones.

I tried covering them in ink and now I'm sort of stuck as to keep attacking these in hopes something comes out or leaving them out. Hopefully something comes out soon.

Right now the bull one is my favourite, I think it's got the right amount of pencil line, white paint and ink bits. The head is still a pain in the neck.

I'm thinking of scraping back this head and putting a smaller one on. The body needs some more work, it's too smooth.

Getting somewhere here. Male bodies are hard for me to draw.

Not sure about this one, maybe some more work.

.convert Anima/Animus

I've decided to refer to the animal head drawings as "Anima/Animus" instead of "Project Arms". "PA" as a name isn't relavant anymore, I'm not sure what to refer to the other drawings as.

I did a little more work on the animal drawings. To do them properly, I'm going to have to get some more reference pictures. I should explain a little more about these pictures. Starting back again at the arist statement (which I have had described by a teacher as a nesscary evil)

Anima - man’s feminine side: in Jungian psychology, the feminine aspect of man’s personality

Animus - woman’s masculine side: in Jungian psychology, the masculine aspect of a woman’s personality

Edit 15th Nov: Completly forgot to add this in while I was writing this.

But this project does owe a lot to Heidi Guthmann Birk, a German ceramics artist that I found while researching some things last semester.

"The Manimals visualise a unity between animals and the human beings…they display features which we consider animal features. But could they, on the other hand, be human features only found in animals? The levels of interpretation are manifold."
Birck in Waller, J, 2001, The Human Form in Clay, The Crowwood Press Ltd, Wiltshire

Then of course, there's this guy who can be found at the intersection of Ann and Wharf Street. I don't know who made him but I'll glad if anyone can tell me.

So what I'm really trying to get at is, a look at what you find when you look at people through a different perspective. Well maybe how we see people in terms of sexuality and desire. Well, I don't know much about those so I'll leave that for another rant.

But if you went and had a look at some womens and mens magazines, there are some pretty obvious things in how they portray the opposite sex. Which are the sort of poses I'm trying to recreate in the "Anima/Animus" series. As for the animal heads, I find a lot of words that relate to sexual organs/acts or just how people refer to each other has some basis/relates to animals.

"Anima (Beefcake)"

I still need to work on the head, this one refers to the the distorted fact that women seem to have some attraction to men with lots of muscles but also to the perception that men need muscles to be "manly".

"Animus (Pussy)"

The head on this one is bothering me, it's in the wrong position thus making the neck too short. I'm not sure if I should scrap the face off and reglue a new set on. Supposably cats (and people) are very amorous creatures. There's something about looking at pictures of girls in guy magazines, and they are always inviting. There's something kind of "sensual" in the poses and the image they generate. Even if she looks like that, I don't know if she really means it. (Seriously, this is getting hard to write about)

"Anima (Cock)"

Another one with a head problem, and I need to seriously fix the body. When you talk about men and women, there's going to be a joke about "compensation". He looks like he's not too willing to talk about things either. I guess he's the strong and silent type.

"Animus (Bitch)"

This one comes from a picture from a underwear add, so her breasts need a lot of work.

Just a few pictures of what I have been working on in drawing class. We've been working on using projections and cardboard boxes. It's been interesting to say the least. Some of these remind me of the word "bayou". If you read the meaning, then you can kind of see where I'm coming from.

Just to share

I just found this via Web Designer Wall, but hitotoki is a site which describes itself as "an online literary project collecting stories of singular experiences tied to locations in cities worldwide".

Which means I've found something else to keep me sitting in front of a computer. I'm pretty excited about finding this, it's simular to the One Book Many Brisbanes Anthologies that's still going strong.

I guess I like "slice of life" stories.

Rope Progress

Some shots of the new additions to the rope sculpture family.

I think there's going to be about 6 - 8 of these, I still don't know how I am going to hang them so hopefully I'll sort it out soon.
For those who can't remember here's,the
other ones.

Tidbits

Some drawings/paintings from last year. They where about working in black and white. I really like the 2nd one where I poured ink over it.

Some concept drawings from last year? or the year before. I did these during work so I can't really say much about their quality.

I was thinking of the really nice backgrounds from Breath of Fire IV with this jungle one.

I like the idea of a city in the clouds, I keep meaning to do a digital painting of this one.

Something from last year, I think it was in the same vein as this.

And some sketches done last week during history class. Some refining of the ships from that last entry

I think this one is based off this short story about this guy and a yak that timetravelled to stop giant iceburg monsters from destroying people. It was a really good story but I can't remember who wrote it.

I came up with a boat but the paddle wheel's shouldn't be that way.

Some cities involving just making doodles with pen and poof, you get a city somehow. The 2nd one earned a "holy castle" from one of my classmates.

This one's based on a drawing I did at work where I wanted to try and draw a tower filled with pipes and neon billboard signs. The blimp is kind of accidental since I started drawing it and then drew over the top of it.

The Whitlams

Okay,I just found this now and I have to share it. The Whitlams on You Tube I will probably spend too many hours watching video clips.

Progress Report

In the last entry, I had a tentative artist statement for the work going into the exhibition. Here's the latest version of it:

These are a series of works that explore the relationships between male and female identities through the use of representation. Sourced from how each sex represents each other in their own media, these works are trying to re-evaluate the concepts of male and female identities and differences. Are we still trying to attract attention from ourselves or from each other? How does one see the other side?

Anima - man’s feminine side: in Jungian psychology, the feminine aspect of man’s personality

Animus - woman’s masculine side: in Jungian psychology, the masculine aspect of a woman’s personality

Scholasticism - close adherence to the methods, traditions, and teachings of a sect or school.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That really doesn't make sense without the pictures and titles. So here's so updated shots of what I'm working on. The animal heads series is not going too badly, hopefully by next week it'll hit the direction it's supposed to. Though the position of some of the heads are bothering me, and I am considering superimposing people faces in there too. And I admit, the names are pretty obvious, but people still use these words so I find it valid.

"Anima (Beefcake)"

"Animus (Bitch)"

"Animus (Pussy)"

"Animus (Cock)"

Details from "Male Scholasticism" and "Female Ecstasy", not sure what's going to happen here, I think there's a bit of confusion going on with what I had planned and what is happening now. At the moment, it looks like it's going to be more text based then pictorial, so if all else fails, I'm just going to draw a whole heap of body parts in the spaces and fill the rest with black and white. Stuff in brackets are my add-ins that I might consider putting in.

Text: (I want) Lots of girls throwing themselves at me/I want their bodies against mine/girls screaming my name
I'm sure somewhere out there, there is the "rock god" dream, who could resist?
Text: When I see them all I can think about is (sex? boobs?)/Yeah, they look pretty good
A short section, possibly about sexual attraction, or male puberty. I have't figured it out yet.
Text: The Ideal Girl
Lots of breasts, there will probably be words describing what kind of girl she should be.
Text: I hate my body/Why can't I change it/She looks.../I'm ugly
Lots of women have issues regarding their bodies
Text: I wish we did it more/Are they thinking of someone else/I feel uncomfortable/I don't want to hurt her(him)/How do I know how many guys she been with(How do I know how many people they've ben with)
Text: Her hand rests on my leg. Is it an open invitation? Does she want me like I want her?
Text: The Ideal Man/The Unideal Man/My Man
Notice, they don't have any faces, I think it's important for this section to leave them faceless.
Text which I'm thinking of:
These are the hands of: a father/a son/a fighter/a misogynist/a protector (some more things)
Text: I'm not aching for you anymore *repeat*
This comes from The Whitlams song "Coming up for Air"
Text: I want someone to hold me/I feel so close to him when we hold hands
There's something about just touching that seems to bring people closer.
