Some drawings/paintings from last year. They where about working in black and white. I really like the 2nd one where I poured ink over it.



Some concept drawings from last year? or the year before. I did these during work so I can't really say much about their quality.

I was thinking of the really nice backgrounds from Breath of Fire IV with this jungle one.

I like the idea of a city in the clouds, I keep meaning to do a digital painting of this one.


Something from last year, I think it was in the same vein as this.


And some sketches done last week during history class. Some refining of the ships from that last entry

I think this one is based off this short story about this guy and a yak that timetravelled to stop giant iceburg monsters from destroying people. It was a really good story but I can't remember who wrote it.

I came up with a boat but the paddle wheel's shouldn't be that way.

Some cities involving just making doodles with pen and poof, you get a city somehow. The 2nd one earned a "holy castle" from one of my classmates.



This one's based on a drawing I did at work where I wanted to try and draw a tower filled with pipes and neon billboard signs. The blimp is kind of accidental since I started drawing it and then drew over the top of it.

Progress Report

In the last entry, I had a tentative artist statement for the work going into the exhibition. Here's the latest version of it:

These are a series of works that explore the relationships between male and female identities through the use of representation. Sourced from how each sex represents each other in their own media, these works are trying to re-evaluate the concepts of male and female identities and differences. Are we still trying to attract attention from ourselves or from each other? How does one see the other side?

Anima - man’s feminine side: in Jungian psychology, the feminine aspect of man’s personality

Animus - woman’s masculine side: in Jungian psychology, the masculine aspect of a woman’s personality

Scholasticism - close adherence to the methods, traditions, and teachings of a sect or school.

That really doesn't make sense without the pictures and titles. So here's so updated shots of what I'm working on. The animal heads series is not going too badly, hopefully by next week it'll hit the direction it's supposed to. Though the position of some of the heads are bothering me, and I am considering superimposing people faces in there too. And I admit, the names are pretty obvious, but people still use these words so I find it valid.

Details from "Male Scholasticism" and "Female Ecstasy", not sure what's going to happen here, I think there's a bit of confusion going on with what I had planned and what is happening now. At the moment, it looks like it's going to be more text based then pictorial, so if all else fails, I'm just going to draw a whole heap of body parts in the spaces and fill the rest with black and white. Stuff in brackets are my add-ins that I might consider putting in.

I'm sure somewhere out there, there is the "rock god" dream, who could resist?

A short section, possibly about sexual attraction, or male puberty. I have't figured it out yet.

Artist statement

I've been asked to write an artist's statement about the work going into "Exit", the end of year exhibition. It's quite challenging because I still haven't figured out why I make art in the way I do and what the art is about. It's getting to be a problem since I've never been able to describe stuff, I just "know". So far this is what I've gotten from my brain last night about the drawings that will go up.

Works that explore the relationships between male and female identities

Drawings

Just some drawings from last semester that were using the campus as an influence. We had to mix things up, by painting part of the the campus, then drawing an unreleated detail on top then add text. Some interesting results. I might use this in some upcoming stuff for my digital art class.











And a little something that I'm trying to work on during my spare time. I'm still somewhat undecided if I should take on continuing Visual Arts or going into Game Design. So far no news on if I have gotten in either course.

Project "Arms" v2.0

Last Friday we had to present our ideas so I ended up making a Powerpoint presentation on the project. Unfortunately one the teachers did say it wasn't ambitious enough which left me in a fairly despondent state by the end of the day. So much of that weekend and this week has been on trying to get it to be better.

Some prototypes of how it was going to be:





I did end up thinking of doing a series of people engaged in some kind of physical movement with animal heads but that is too similar to Laura Skerl , who makes very beautiful paintings but on campus, she like everyones flavour of the month. So the people will come out differently.

The new goal is to make 4 pictures of strange headed people and two large mixed media works. I think the mixed media works might look like this. Not too sure yet, maybe something similar. I should really stop looking at his work but there is something appealing about the greyscale stuff he does.

Some plan drawings




On the last post I mentioned that I was making an installation in rope. It hasn't gone according to plan so the new stage is to thread it through some chicken wire and kind of progress the forms from there. That's not happening very well so we'll see what happens next.
